Motorhome adventures are all about freedom and exploring the great outdoors, but the weather doesn’t always play along. Rain, wind and storms can be part of the experience—especially when travelling around the UK. The good news is that with a few simple precautions and the right mindset, bad weather doesn’t have to spoil your trip. In fact, it can create some of the cosiest and most memorable moments of your journey.
When the weather turns windy, where you park your motorhome becomes extremely important.
Avoid parking under trees, as strong winds can cause branches to fall or debris to land on your vehicle. It’s also best to stay away from open, exposed areas such as hilltops, coastal headlands or large open fields where wind can hit the motorhome directly.
Equally, try not to park close to cliffs or steep drops during stormy weather. Coastal winds can be unpredictable and much stronger than expected. Instead, look for more sheltered areas such as designated campsites, locations with natural windbreaks, or spots protected by buildings or landscape features.
Prolonged rain can also create challenges, particularly when water begins to pool on the roof of the motorhome.
A simple trick many experienced motorhomers use is to slightly elevate the front of the motorhome. This helps water run off rather than collecting in dips or around roof features like skylights. Using levelling ramps to raise the front slightly can make a big difference during very wet conditions and help prevent water pooling.
If severe weather is forecast, it’s always best to take it seriously. When an amber warning is issued, it’s wise to review your plans carefully and consider whether travelling is necessary. Conditions can change quickly, particularly with strong winds.
If a red weather warning is in place, the safest option is to stay parked and wait for conditions to improve. Aside from the obvious safety concerns, many motorhome insurance policies may not cover travel during severe weather warnings, so it’s usually best to settle in somewhere safe until the storm has passed.
Bad weather can actually create some of the most memorable moments on a motorhome trip. When the rain is tapping on the roof and the wind is blowing outside, there’s something special about being tucked up inside together. It’s the perfect time to slow down and enjoy quality family time.
Stormy evenings are ideal for:
Sometimes these cosy indoor moments end up being just as special as the adventures outside.
Motorhoming isn’t only about sunny days and perfect views. It’s about the whole experience—rain, wind and all.
With a little preparation, sensible parking and a positive attitude, bad weather simply becomes another part of the adventure. And who knows? Those cosy evenings together while the storm passes might just become some of your favourite travel memories.
